Graham Obree is a champion amateur cyclist who since childhood has been suffering the psychological effects of bullying. The film, based on a true story, tracks Obree from an early age and from the first bicycle he received, which is when he started racing away from classmates. After opening his own bicycle shop as an adult and becoming a bicycle courier, Obree sets out to beat world records by constructing his own maximum efficiency bicycle made partly with pieces of washing machine. Amid rare victories overshadowed by failures and setbacks, Obree is discouraged by the cycling community and retreats back into a shell of isolation. Fast-paced, with talented, heartfelt acting, the sports film is a quick snapshot of a man constantly in conflict with bipolar disorder.
